Heel pain is very common amongst the general population. The two main causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis or a heel spur. They can be similar in presentation, however it is important to distinguish between the two, to ensure proper treatment of the area.
Plantar Fasciitis - inflammation of the ligament along the sole of the foot
Symptoms: morning pain or pain after rest, gradually gotten worse over time, centre to medial aspect of heel
Cause: overuse, long periods of standing, weight gain, inappropriate footwear
Treatment: exercise regime, ice, footwear, orthotics
Heel Spur - bony growth to the base of the heel
Symptoms: severe pain to direct point in heel
Cause: repeated stress on heel, due to excessive activity, overuse, inappropriate footwear
Treatment: padding around heel, ice, footwear, orthotics
